Compensation
Working at a camp is a real job! The YLC experience is rewarding as a camper and as a staff. Our staff members will receive $1,500 for their work during the camp session.

Summer Positions
All positions require a background check.

Camp Director – the deadline for this position is as soon as possible
The Camp Director plans and reinforces the overall program from July – August under the instruction and supervision of the Camp Director and NAD Director of Youth Programs. Job responsibilities include, (and not limited to):
- Work closely with the Director of Youth Programs of NAD.
- Supervise and work closely with the administration team;
- Assist in recruitment of staff and campers;
- Hire qualified staff through an application process and personal contacts;
- Design, deliver and evaluate camp program that meets the needs and interests of the camps target populations and ensure their delivery in a safe and quality manner;
- Develop and coordinate the preparation for the camp program;
- Assist with producing online pre-camp staff newsletter;
- Establish and maintain the daily staff supervision schedule, including the daily camper schedule; and the master schedule;
- Lead the staff orientation/training week;
- Supervise and work closely with staff and campers; monitor Chefs and Nurses duties;
- Run daily staff meetings;
- Assist in the development of the policies and regulations for the campers and staff, including carrying out camp safety regulations;
- Accompany an ill or injured staff to the hospital, if the nurse is not available;
- Leads the staff meetings; supervise all staff members’ job performances;
- Handles communication between campers and parents; decides final consequences for campers, when needed.
- Be accountable with all final decisions and approvals related to camp operations. Decisions regarding campers and staff shall be acted upon after consultation with Director of Youth Programs;
- Enforce compliance with safety, fire, and health and sanitation regulations, including facility requirements;
- Inform the Director of Youth Programs immediately of any urgent/ emergency situations;
- Submit a post-session report that includes suggestions for the next summer session to the Director of Youth Programs;
- Perform other duties assigned by the Director of Youth Programs.

Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
- Fluency in American Sign Language
- 21+ years of age preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities
- Consent to a complete background check
- Experience in working with Youth Leadership
- Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR (if you do not have a certification, we will provide training during the Builders’ Training)
- Experience working with youth (high school students preferred)
- Ability to work in a group setting and a fast-paced environment
- Preferably to have worked at YLC in the past
Assistant Camp Director
Assistant Director
The Camp Assistant Director plans and reinforces the overall program from March – August under the instruction and supervision of the Camp Director and NAD Director of Youth Programs. Specific job responsibilities include, (and not limited to):
- Carry out the NAD Youth Leadership Camp program, under the instruction and supervision of the Camp Director and/or Director of Youth Programs;
- Assist the camp director with the hire of the staff members;
- Assist with the staff orientation/training week and overall camp schedule
- Supervise and work closely with staff;
- Assist in the development of the policies and regulations for the campers and staff, including carrying out camp safety regulations;
- Accompany an ill or injured staff to the hospital, if the nurse is not available;
- Inform Camp Director immediately of any urgent/emergency situations;
- Participate in staff meetings; supervise all staff members’ job performances;
- Act on the behalf of the Camp Director when the Camp Director is off-site;
- Responsible for field trip logistics;
- Accept various camp job responsibilities as assigned by the Camp Director.

Staff/ Camp Counselors (Builders)
In other words, our Builders are our camp staff/counselors. Our staff takes a critical part in our camp program. Job responsibilities include, (and not limited to):
- Supervise campers daily and in living unit (cabins);
- Responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating and execute activities (you will teach a specific skill or work in a specific activity area -Outdoor Living Skills, Daily Drum, Discovery, or etc);
- Ensure safety of camp attendees;
- Participate and assist in all program areas as assigned;
- Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior;
- Contribute to written evaluations and communications.
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

Administrative Assistant
Administrative Assistant
Reinforces the overall program during YLC under the instruction and supervision of the Camp Director, Assistant Director, and NAD Director of Youth Programs. This position is part of the NAD YLC Administration Team. Specific job responsibilities include, (and not limited to):
- Work with Business Manager to oversee the canteen break;
- Keep the administration building neat and organized;
- Ensure that everything is in order on the campground;
- Maintain the inventory of all camp supplies;
- Handle camp mail, including picking up incoming mail;
- Pick up/drop off guest speakers at the Portland International Airport (PDX) when needed;
- Responsible for camp hospitality;
- Assist the Business Manager with various tasks;
- Accept various camp job responsibilities as assigned by the Camp Director.
Note: Some duties may be reassigned by Camp Director and/or the NAD Director of Youth Programs.
Desired Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
- Fluency in American Sign Language

Business Manager
Reinforces the overall program from May – August under the instruction and supervision of the Camp Director, Assistant Director, and NAD Director of Youth Programs. This position is part of the NAD YLC Administration Team. Specific job responsibilities include, (and not limited to):
- Keep records of all expenses and revenues during the camp session;
- Maintain all records of campers’ accounts;
- Oversee the canteen break;
- Manage campers’ cash during field trips;
- Purchase approved materials and supplies;
- Keep the administration building neat and organized;
- Ensure that everything is in order on the campground;
- Maintain the inventory of all camp supplies;
- Handle camp mail, including picking up incoming mail;
- Pick up/drop off guest speakers at the Portland International Airport (PDX).

Food Service Team (Chef/ Cook)
Work with the Food Service Team in providing nutritious, well-prepared meals, which are served to all campers, staff, and guests. Specific job responsibilities include, (and not limited to):
Assist in the daily operations of the camp’s food service.
- Prepare and cook food as the menu indicates utilizing frying, boiling, broiling, steaming, roasting of meat, poultry, seafood, fish, vegetables, salads, soups, and gravies.
- Prepare foods including washing and peeling
- Bake breads, pastries, muffins, etc
- Set up food, supplies, and utensils for dining hall distribution
- Store food and leftovers at proper temperature
2. Assist in routine sanitation of the kitchen and related equipment.
- Clean and maintain all food-preparation and storage area
- Supervise the cleaning of prep, serving, and dining hall dishe
- Reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle as indicated through the camp’s procedures.
3. Work as a member of a food service team.
- Coordinate schedule and job tasks with other cooks, dining hall manager, and kitchen assistants
- Assist with supervising or directing the work of the kitchen assistants
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
- Fluency in American Sign Language
- Be 21 years or older (preferably)
- Consent to a complete background check
- Experience in institutional or food service setting.
- Desire to work in the food service area.
- Knowledge of standards of food preparation and serving, storage of food, and kitchen procedures.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds including unloading food, supplies, and equipment as needed.
- Ability to operate kitchen equipment according to safe, recommended methods.
- Determine cleanliness of dishes, food surfaces, and kitchen area.
- Ability to assess condition of food.
- Knowledge of current health and safety laws and practices is essential.
- Knowledge of and experience in preparation of special dietary foods including vegetarian foods.
- Knowledge of food service sanitation.
- Must be able to obtain Oregon Food Handler’s Card.
Nurse
Responsible for overseeing the health and safety of campers and staff. Specific job responsibilities include, (and not limited to):
- Provide healthcare to meet individual needs of camp staff and campers.
- Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff.
- Set up the camp Health Center
- Prepare and utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications.
- Inventory and order all necessary medical supplies and equipment.
- Ensure staff and camper health examinations are current and on file.
- Prepare and record insurance and accident report forms.
- Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies.
- Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp including camp vehicles, kitchen, offices, waterfront, activity areas, out-of-camp trips.
- Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed.
- Screen all campers and staff who are arriving and departing camp.
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)
- Registered Nurse (RN) with a license as required by Oregon state law
- CPR certified
- Current first aid certification and experience in first aid and emergency management
- Driver’s license
- Experience in both children and adult illness/injury care
- Desire to work with children and young adults

- How can you contribute as a potential administration team or staff member, towards the overall NAD YLC program? Include your qualities and experience for positions that you are interested in applying for.

- If you are a former NAD YLC administration team/staff member and are applying for this year, please explain what were your strengths and weaknesses during your previous session as a YLC staff member? How do you plan to improve on them this summer?
Video Essay
Applicants need to submit a 1.5-2 minute video answering the question, “What skills do you have that makes you a good fit to be a YLC camp counselor?” Please provide your video link in the application form.
