Compensation

Working at a camp is a real job! The YLC experience is rewarding as a camper and as a staff. Our staff members will receive $1,800 for their work during the camp session and $200 stipend for travel.

On top of your paycheck, you also get:

Summer Positions

All positions require a background check.

Staff/ Camp Counselors (Builders)

In other words, our Builders are our camp staff/counselors. Our staff takes a critical part in our camp program. Job responsibilities include, (and not limited to):

  • Supervise campers daily and in living unit (cabins);
  • Responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating and execute activities  (you will teach a specific skill or work in a specific activity area -Outdoor Living Skills, Daily Drum, Discovery, or etc);
  • Ensure safety of camp attendees;
  • Participate and assist in all program areas as assigned;
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior;
  • Contribute to written evaluations and communications.

Qualifications:  (Minimum Education and Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Fluency in American Sign Language
  • 21+ years of age preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities
  • Consent to a complete background check
  • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR (if you do not have a certification, we will provide training during the Builders’ Training)
  • Experience working with youth (high school students preferred)
  • Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in program areas designated camp program areas

Camp Assistant Director

The Camp Assistant Director plans and reinforces the overall program from March – August under the instruction and supervision of the Camp Director and NAD Director of Youth Programs. Specific job responsibilities include, (and not limited to):

  • Assist the camp director with the hire of the staff members;
  • Assist with producing online pre-camp staff newsletter;
  • Assist with the staff orientation/training week and overall camp schedule
  • Supervise and work closely with staff;
  • Assist in the development of the policies and regulations for the campers and staff, including carrying out camp safety regulations;
  • Accompany an ill or injured staff to the hospital, if the nurse is not available;
  • Participate in staff meetings; supervise all staff members’ job performances;
  • Act on the behalf of the Camp Director when the Camp Director is off-site;
  • Accept various camp job responsibilities as assigned by the Camp Director.

Qualifications:  (Minimum Education and Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Fluency in American Sign Language
  • 21+ years of age preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities
  • Consent to a complete background check
  • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR (if you do not have a certification, we will provide training during the Builders’ Training)
  • Experience in working with Youth Leadership
  • Ability to work in a group setting a fast-paced environment

Curriculum Coordinator

The Curriculum Coordinator reinforces the overall program from March – August under the instruction and supervision of the Camp Director, Assistant Director, and NAD Director of Youth Programs. Specific job responsibilities include, (and not limited to):

  • Manage oversight of the NAD YLC curriculum; responsible for keeping the manuals up to date; work closely with Coordinators to update their guidelines;
  • Oversee and attend all camp activities and events;
  • Update and revise and camper evaluations;
  • Gauge staff and camper policies and regulations;
  • Review the Daily Drum newsletters and provide feedback to campers;
  • Coordinate arrangements for all guest speakers with the Hospitality Specialist such as setting up workshops; preparing PPTs; and review daily schedule with the presenters;
  • Meet with the Special Projects advisors at least once a week; ensuring that all projects are covered;
  • Pick up/drop off guest speakers at the Portland International Airport (PDX) when needed
  • Accept various camp job responsibilities as assigned by the Camp Director.

Business Manager

Reinforces the overall program from May – August under the instruction and supervision of the Camp Director, Assistant Director, and NAD Director of Youth Programs. This position is part of the NAD YLC Administration Team. Specific job responsibilities include, (and not limited to):

  • Keep records of all expenses and revenues during the camp session;
  • Maintain all records of campers’ accounts;
  • Oversee the canteen break;
  • Manage campers’ cash during field trips;
  • Purchase approved materials and supplies;
  • Keep the administration building neat and organized;
  • Ensure that everything is in order on the campground;
  • Maintain the inventory of all camp supplies;
  • Handle camp mail, including picking up incoming mail;
  • Pick up/drop off guest speakers at the Portland International Airport (PDX).

Qualifications:  (Minimum Education and Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Fluency in American Sign Language
  • 21+ years of age preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities
  • Consent to a complete background check
  • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR (if you do not have a certification, we will provide training during the Builders’ Training)
  • Experience in business or office setting
  • Knowledge of and experience in business: ordering, inventory, cash management, and office equipment use.
  • Must maintain a current Drivers’ License
  • Ability to work within a budget and purchase supplies efficiently.

Administrative Assistant

Reinforces the overall program from May – August under the instruction and supervision of the Camp Director, Assistant Director, and NAD Director of Youth Programs. This position is part of the NAD YLC Administration Team. Specific job responsibilities include, (and not limited to):

  • Ensures all of our guest speakers are welcomed;
  • Responsible for workshops – communicate with guest speakers in advance on their technical needs;
  • Set up beds/rooms for the guest speakers and volunteers;
  • Keep the administration building neat and organized;
  • Ensure that everything is in order on the campground;

  • Pick up/drop off guest speakers at the Portland International Airport (PDX);
  • Perform other tasks/duties when needed.

Media Specialist (Builder)

Required to be on-site during the entire duration of training, camp and wrap up. Specific job responsibilities include, (and not limited to):

  • Handles for YLC social media (Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter);
  • Runs the camp blog;
  • Works closely with the Daily Drum advisors;
  • Take camp photos and create albums;
  • Shoot and develop promotional videos;
  • Write transcripts and captions for videos;
  • Responsible for all of the image/graphic/video descriptions to ensure accessibility;
  • Assist other builders in other tasks when needed.

Qualifications:  (Minimum Education and Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Fluency in American Sign Language
  • 21+ years of age preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities
  • Consent to a complete background check
  • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR (if you do not have a certification, we will provide training during the Builders’ Training)
  • Experience in using social media
  • Knowledge of using a camera, video shooting, and video editing
  • Ability to work in a group setting and a fast-paced environment
  • Capable of developing transcripts and image/ video descriptions

Applicants for builders are required to complete the online Staff application. If we do not receive all required information, online application, resume and three letters of recommendation, the applicant will not be considered for a position. You will be notified of your acceptance for the interview portion of the application process. After your interview, we will contact you with our decision.

Cover Letter & Resume
  • All applicants are required to submit a resume in a Microsoft Word document and save it as YLC_Staff Resume_LastName _FirstName. (ex. YLC_Staff_Resume_Willicheva_Sami.doc).
  • You must also submit a cover letter (saved as YLC_Staff_Cover_LastName_FirstName.doc) with answers to two out of the following questions:
  1. How can you contribute as a potential administration team or staff member, towards the overall NAD YLC program? Include your qualities and experience for  positions that you are interested in applying for.
  2. What are your overall personal and professional goal(s) and how will working at YLC help you attain these?
  3. If you are a former NAD YLC administration team/staff member and are applying for this year, please explain what were your strengths and weaknesses during your previous session as a YLC staff member? How do you plan to improve on them this summer?
Video Essay

Applicants need to submit a 1.5-2 minute video answering the question, “What skills do you have that makes you a good fit to be a YLC camp counselor?”  Please provide your video link in the application form.
